Having gone through this experience last week, when I found all my original documents including my mark sheets missing, I have started believing, at the risk of sounding weird though, that each one of us should actually misplace something really important at least once.
Reasons:
1. It gives us a sense of belief how hopeless we can get and even some confidence that we can never be more careless than this (No one would even give us responsibilities to be careless again anyways..!!!). We really need such an eye-opener, don't we?
2. Trust me, the pleasure of finding them back after 4 days in the same place where you expected it to be, just in some weird envelope which you just didn't care to check, makes up for all those sleepless nights you go through.
3. Surely makes our parents real proud when they can start 'See I had told you to be careful. When are you going to grow up. What if we gave you reins of this house.....'. After all we concede a victory in that eternal debate about whose generation is better...!!!
And for a change, we feel they are absolutely right. We don't want to face them.
And then after we have found our stuff, its our turn to pump up our chest and say, "Come on! I am not that irresponsible and careless, just that I am not good at searching. Big deal, I am not going to be a detective anyways..!!!"
4. We suddenly seek favor from all those guys whom we might have paid just 50ps/1Re for a photocopy expecting him to miraculously find all our documents out there in his messed up shop.
5. It ensures that we are going to be meticulous and damn organised for everything we have and that we start making an index for even stuff that you throw in the bin (Just to cross check in future, if required, that you haven't thrown something important..!!!!!)
6. And yeah, its makes us believe that the person who finally finds our stuff was God sent; was born and brought up for more than 20 years just so that we could afford to be careless once in our life.
Disclaimer: This exercise has its side-effects too. It does make us feel far more miserable when we are back to our normal self and throwing things around now that we have experienced the consequences. (It's like knowing that you gonna slip on that banana peel someday that you yourself are throwing around..!!!)

~ Frances Rodman
..would be even happier if you lost everything and realized that you didn't need it in the first place : P
